Hi all! Hope you enjoyed all that studying we had to do for that test...=(...anyways back to the matter at hand. Today I would like to talk to you about how I failed my group as a member and as maybe as its faux leader. If we take a look into the five steps, I can safely say that all were taken though it may not have been in class. I will explain as I continue. First of all we all knew what our objectives were. They were stated on the slides. However, because of our misconception of the assignment or lack of ability to think outside the box, we would later fail.
As for the recources and our current position in relation to the objective, we knew exactly what was going on. We had straws tape an egg and our skills to preform a task that was new to us. It was this reason that I had worked alittle on the project before class. I had a feeling that when asked to do this in class many people would either just go with the group decision or not contribute too much. So I came up with a couple of alternatives and designs to bring to class. While in the group, I asked if anyone had any ideas and as I thought, nobody really spoke up. And this is where my mistake happened. I sold my idea to my group without any opposition.
The idea seemed very solid at the time and when it came time to choose our course of action it wasn't exactly premeditated. It actually occured as we were in step 5 (implementation). As we were producing the product we were assigning tasks and coordinating with eachother. Later after our failure, the team independantly evaluated the event. Most likely many of them had the same idea as I, Teddy! argggg. I feel that everything we did as a team was a success, however if it were not for my ambition to get extra points on my test we may have come up with a better idea. Lesson learned I will try not to make the same mistake next time. Sorry guys!

I dont think you should feel sorry at all. You were the one who contrinuted the most with the project. I was not in your team but I can honestly tell you (because of my team)that not coming up with a Plan B is the most important failure during the planning process. Many people were able to provide ideas but nobody in my team actually formulated an additional plan. Apparently that is what happen to your team as well.
ReplyDeleteNeither my team nor yours got those fabulous 5 points the Prof was offering. :(
I think you were pretty smart preparing yourself for the project since our professor gave us the project before hand. Next time, if you have time you could try your ideas at home and make sure that it will work. However, something can always go wrong. Also you did a good job anyway, having a plan is better than having no plan. Since all members agreed on your plan, there is nothing you should feel bad about.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it is your fault. The other members should have spoken up. I guess they liked your idea so they agreed with everything you said. Maybe they didn't want the 5 extra points.
ReplyDeletedont be so hard on yourself! if only we utilized that last straw everone forgot about, the outcome might of been different. like you said, this was a task im sure no one had experienced and therefore it was a lesson learned. i think if we were given a second chance we would definitely execute our task and receive the wonderful, compensating 5 points. but, overall i think the plan was a pretty good plan so for what its worth, ill give you 5 points.
ReplyDeletefirstly, im really impressed with the initiative that you took with preparing and designing for the project.
ReplyDeletei also think that its very common in group projects where a leader or influencer emerges in the group and where everyone just follows along because its easier. However, i definitely dont think its your fault that your egg cracked--you contributed your best idea and it was up to other to contribute and improve on it. :)
Sounds to me you did a pretty good job for the project. It's not your fault that nobody wanted to participate and get the extra five points, and the important thing was that you thought hard about the subject and contributed. Plus most of us failed at the end, I think luck was an important factor beside the actual project. Because even if the design worked well, the physics of the egg dropping can complete ruin it, so it's ok, better luck next time!
