Classroom Chaos Cooled

Isn't it interesting to see how different people are? Everyone had different agendas, points of views and personalities. These factors and many others contribute to why it is difficult for a large group of people to come to a collective agreement on an issue. In class, professor Kurpis stated that there were 5 ways in which people react to situations similar to that of the class. These are
1. Compete to win Assertiveness to get one’s own way
2. Avoidance Withdrawal; used when there’s “no chance of winning”
3. Compromise Used with decision making under pressure; all members are equal
4. Accommodation Seeing issue as more important to others than self
5. Collaborating Requires bargaining and negotiation among group
Multiple group insights required
Because the class immediately turned to chaos, I was convinced by a classmate to take action. At first I went into avoidance though I was aware that something had to be done to organize the class. Thanks to the concern shown by my classmate I changed my approach to a collaborating and compromising one. I wanted to let as many people be heard and to somehow get our ideas across to everyone (including the professor) for evaluation. Honestly I thought as a class, we would not be able to come to an agreement on a single solution, however to my surprise we were able to successfully come together for a greater cause. .............EVERYONE GIVE YOURSELVES A PAT ON THE BACK! You really deserve it!................=) I think the outcome would have been better if we had some more time to weigh out even more possibilities, however given the amount of time and information, I believe that we accomplished something special.

  1. You were basically responsible for achieving what the class so desperately needed. Without your leadership, we would all be in a pretty bad situation in terms of grades. It takes a lot of self confidence and bravery to be able to stand up in front of a bunch of screaming people who only have their own agendas in mind. You definitely showed natural leadership ability!! Congratulations.

  2. You did an excellent job in controlling the chaos, Leader! It’s good that you took actions toward the end of the class (not that that guy was not good…you’re just more influential!), got everyone to settle down and wrote up the ideas that majority of the class was satisfied with. You should pat yourself in the back too. Good luck in your next exam!!

  3. You are totally right, as soon as the professor said we were allowed to start discussing the class went into chaos. Without your guidance and leadership, it probably would have remained this way until the very end. Without you, the class would have accomplished nothing and most of us would be stuck with some really miserable grades!!
I do agree that with more time we would have been able to accomplish much more, but lets not get greedy now! You are very right that the class did accomplish something special that not too many other classes would be able to accomplish, thanks to you.

  4. I agree with all the responses above, you saved us and helped the decision making process along by eliminate the chaos! I think we would not have been able to gain this much if you didn't take the leadership role, so way to go!

  5. Good job Teddy. For a while there I thought that the class would get nothing accomplished. It's a good thing that we pulled through in the end. Considering that we basically rushed the decision I agree that we ended up with a pretty good result.

  6. I think you have great collaborating skills because you were able to bring the class together, something many can only wish to accomplish. You even gave us a jump start on decision making because in the first few minutes of class you suggested that we put our ideas on the whitewash. Basically you broke the barrier that was keeping all the ideas from being communicated. After that you helped the class again by delegating compromising with us which without it, there would have been no conclusion. Thanks for your hardwork.
