What is this?
Dominance- emphasis on shaping the environment by overcoming opposition to accomplish results
Influence- emphasis on shaping the environment by influencing or persuading others
Steadiness- emphasis on cooperating with others to carry out the task.
Conscientiousness- emphasis on working conscientiously within existing circumstances to ensure quality and accuracy.
Now I get it!
At the start of this assignment, I was extremely confused. Professor Kurpis did explain what we were doing, but when the words and the corresponding letters came up on the projector, I sat there feeling like a little boy lost in a parking lot. It was until the very end after we evaluated our results did I say WOW! For me this test was pretty accurate. I say that I am an "I" or act by "influence". This if very true for me because I do tend to try to shape my environment by influencing or persuading others. This is evident I guess when I constantly speak my mind. LOL. As for wishing I were another type, I don't think there is a better or worse type. It is who you are and therefore I wouldn't care to be D S or C. Not that there are anythings wrong with them. I'm just happy to be an I. I feel that understanding a person's type is important and can prove useful when trying to work together or understand each other. Many times it is difficult to examine a person and right away know what type of ideas or perceptions they have, but this test gives you a better sense (though it may not be exact or detailed) of what type of person they are. I think tests like this can work for any type or relationship in life. For example it would be useful for employer employee relationships, professor student relationships, neighbor to neighbor relationships. It can be useful for romantic relationships as well, but why take the fun out of a little curiosity?
As for our stranded situation, I think I would chose to have a D or dominant leader. I think that in such and extreme situation, you would need someone who can put their foot down and make decisions. However there are some conditions that would have to be met in order to survive. First the D or dominant leader would have to have the most expertise in the situation because s/he would probably throw out the ideas of others no matter how good or bad they were. To avoid much conflict and time delays the rest of the group should consist of no more Ds. The others can consist of an I who agrees with the D and try to influence the others or many Ss who would help out in efforts to survive. C's would be very good to include because they may come up with alternatives that were not created. Overall all Ds Is Ss and Cs would create a great and necessary mix, however whatever the mix, the most important things are to establish a leader, assess the situation, agree on a plan, and quickly implement the plan where everyone commits to its completion.

I believe you were the great individual who got things going for our team conflict activity. You were definitely influential and brought the chaos to a halt, making sure all ideas were heard while keeping things organized. You transformed the classroom chaos into a working environment where a final, successful decision was made. Your charismatic nature allowed communication to flow more smoothly and was definitely what was needed in such a tense environment at that time. For that, I say that this DISC test accurately assessed you.
ReplyDeleteI also agree that a good mix of all the letters are needed in group work, like the Stranded! activity.
I'm also a high "I" person. I like to influence others and persuade them. I agree that this class activity can help us understand ourselves more, also as you said, “this can work for any type or relationship in life. For example it "would be useful for employer employee relationships, professor student relationships, neighbor to neighbor relationships. It can be useful for romantic relationships as well." When we working outside, it is better to understand different types of people and avoid conflicts.
ReplyDeleteyou definitely demonstrated your influential skills quite a few times in management class; egg dropping, team conflict, and all the other activities. i agree when you say "i dont think there is a better or worse type. It is who you are". in other words, everybody is different, and the type of person you are, corresponds with D, I, S, C. note, your difference doesnt make you, or others any better, but makes you a necessary piece to a "successful team" puzzle.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with others that you are a great influential leader (plus a bit of conscientiousness in you). From all the past group works we had done together, I conclude that you’re just plainly awesome (lol). You don’t demand things your way even though they make a lot of sense (I guess that’s what you called being influential – filling group members with your reasonable thoughts). We may not win in any of our group works (sad…but we were closed to winning in the stranded! one!!); I did learn a lot from you in terms of techniques as an influential leader.
ReplyDeleteBased on the semester so far I'm not surprised that you got the result of being a high I. It's actually very apparant and reasonable to see that you would be that type of leader based on past situation like when we had to work out a new format for the second test. I actually didn't score being a I as my primary or secondary but I guess that's just how I am. Either way just continue speaking your mind and leading by influencing, it will also be very benefical in the long run for you anyways.
ReplyDeleteYea I agree that your result fits you very well. Great minds like alike! The only difference is that I actually thought a C would be better on a stranded island because they would try very hard to come up with the best possible solution.
ReplyDeleteEven though we haven’t worked together in a group, I do agree that you have an I personality. That is because you came up to manage the class when we all were to come up with a decision of what we should request Prof. Kurpis after the 1st exam. You did influence people in a sense, but for the most party you helped in organizing the class’s wants so they would be better understood by each student. I believe that was influential because you organized the ideas and we all followed what you had set so, in a sense we were persuaded by you.
