Group work is supposed to be FUN!

Hello everyone. Hope you all had a great Valentine's day / long weekend! Professor Kurpis has asked us all to write about a management problem we will face or will be facing. I am so stuck! I have management issues just like many of you do. IE. problems with time management, work, relationships, etc. These are issues that I have dealt with for so long that they are not really problems, but just a part of life for me. As each situation occurs I take care of them best I can. So the only thing that I can see as a problem that is out of my hands is the task of doing group projects. Almost every semester, I am assigned a group project by one of my classes and every time there is a problem getting in touch with people, laziness, or procrastination. In the past, I have dealt with group project issues as I would have with work thinking I would get similar results. Boy was I wrong. I guess at work, people have more to lose if something goes wrong or they just care more. My past experiences in group work at school have shown me that you can't rely on too many people to get the work done. This really gets at me because our performance as a group will affect all our grades and I really do try to keep my grades up. This semester, I have a couple of group presentations in my literature class and I can already see some unreliable people in my group. I don't want to jump to conclusions about anyone, however to cushion the workload of slackers, I am preparing myself to handle things. Hopefully my group members or I will not have to suffer. As you read this, please feel free to CRAAQ on my posting and help me out! Thanks

  1. Group work is fun, but i agree with you. I've had some partners that don't show up to class at all, or maybe just show up from time to time and expect to catch up, not happening. Come on, group projects are a team effort and it can be fun when your team mates cooperate and put out evenly. This is the reason why I love and believe in team evaluations at the end of the project. The professor needs to know whose contributing and whose not, after all it is a team grade and you shouldnt have to lose just because of someone else's irresponsibilities. Well, Craaq just do your best and if your other team mate is not really putting out, it is an issue you and your other team mates have to bring up to your professor. Good Luck!

  2. I hate group work too. At least when you are at work people are sort of filtered, if they have a job they must have some kind of work ethic. I have 3 group projects this semester, all three are for different classes, with three different groups of people. While getting everyone's information down, one guy in my group asked me for paper. Then he asked me for a pen. He was the last one to copy everyone else's info down. And then at the end he took everyone's contact sheet to correct the spelling of his last name, which he misspelled on 4 of the other contact sheets. Does he inspire confidence?

  3. Aww Lev. I feel for you. Hopefully you can let us know how your groups are interacting as you work with them. Just to clarify. I do not hate group work. I actually enjoy it and feel that I learn better in groups than on my own. The problem I have is when people don't want to contribute to the learning experience. Keep on CRAAQing!

  4. Wow! That hit home! Literally, you mirrored my feelings towards group projects. Yea, the professor emphasizes the significance of tolerating diversity and all, but how do you tolerate a group member who contributes little to no effort? shouldn't group work be apportioned equally? unfortunately, the world that we live in is not perfect and therefore people are different; an A to us equates a C to them. we all want to get a good grade so do your job, as what you put in, reflects your grade. i don't understand this indifference towards group projects. cant we all just get along?
